Liposarcomas are uncommon malignant soft tissue tumors originating from fat cells. Liposarcomas are categorized into well differentiated, myxoid/round cell, pleomorphic, and dedifferentiated types. Although liposarcomas can be located in any body region, they are frequently located in the retroperitoneal area and thigh. Liposarcomas usually take origin from soft tissues that are located deeply. Liposarcomas originating primarily from superficial soft tissues are very rare. The aim of this report is to review the characteristics of cutaneous and subcutaneous liposarcomas. Superficial liposarcomas generally present themselves as high histopathological grade tumors and majority of them are pleomorphic liposarcomas. However superficial liposarcomas have better prognosis than deep seated or retroperitoneal liposarcomas as it is easier to treat them surgically.
