We aimed to evaluate the etiologic, demographic factors, clinical features and also prognostic factors which effect the survival of hepatocellular cancer (HCC) patients.
METHODS
We retrospectively analyzed 213 HCC patients who were diagnosed
at medical oncology clinic.
RESULTS
Fourth (18.8%) chronic alcoholic, 142 (66.7%) hepatitis B,
and 26 (12.2%) patients were hepatitis C. Median overall survival
was 5.5 months (95% CI: 3.5-7.5). We detected statically
significant effect of ECOG performance status, Child-Pugh
score, portal venous thrombosis, levels of albumin, bilirubin,
AST and AFP, presence of cirrhosis and the choice of treatment
modality on overall survival. Assessment of response to
first-line chemotherapy, 65 (91.5%) patients had progressive
disease, two (2.8%) patients had stable disease, four (5.6%)
patients had a partial response.
CONCLUSION
Viral hepatitis is the major leading etiological factors of HCC
in our country. Despite all efforts, shorter life spans and cytotoxic
therapies are not effective in this disease.
